On June 2, the Florida International University Board of Trustees voted unanimously to name Jeanette M. Nuñez the university’s seventh president.
On June 18, the Florida Board of Governors confirmed her appointment as FIU’s president and announced that FIU once again is the highest performing public university in the state.
President Nuñez is the first FIU alumna to hold the university's top job. She earned a bachelor’s degree from FIU in political science and international relations in 1994 and a master’s degree in public administration in 1998. She is also a former adjunct faculty member who taught a graduate-level course on health policy and served as a guest lecturer over the years.
Before serving as interim president, President Nuñez spent 15 years serving the State of Florida as a state representative and as lieutenant governor. Prior to serving in government, she was vice president of governmental affairs at Jackson Health System and held similar leadership positions at Kendall Regional Hospital and Aventura Hospital Medical Center.
